MOEISE VALLEY HOUSE
This small, but spacious home sits in the picturesque Moise Valley in Western Montana. The plan comes in at just over 1400 sf and features 1 bedroom plus a loft and 1 ½ bathrooms. The house is sited and stretched out on an N-S axis to afford views of the southern Mission mountains across the eastern horizon and the National Bison Range to the East. A simple covered entry and minimal windows face the West approach to buffer the windy and hot prairie of the Moise Valley. The house does not attempt to compete with this landscape, but entering from the West compresses the vista and revives it anew through the expansive Eastern windows. A generous covered porch continues the theme, opening broadly to the SE aspect and sheltering the occupants from the West.
Dark bronze corrugated steel siding and roofing wrap the long axis of the house for a no-maintenance exterior on the higher exposures, while natural stained fir/Larch rough-sawn siding clads the gable ends. The resulting aesthetic juxtaposes an overtly modern building form with softer natural materials at the touchpoints of the house.
The building envelope is built to Hone’s high standards for energy efficiency including our standard double stud walls, and <1.0ACH air tightness, as well as a blend of high-performance European windows from Zola, and Marvin. The home’s small size and well-insulated envelope allowed the use of a modestly sized electric boiler to heat the exposed concrete slab floors.
