BAYHORSE CABIN PREFAB
The bayhorse cabin is Hone’s most ambitious endeavor into prefabrication to date. The cabin was fully constructed at our facility in Missoula, then shipped in 3 primary modules to its remote location in Eastern Montana. The two 14X32 ft habitation modules and a 40 ft shipping container with all equipment, finishes, and built-in furnishings were transported by truck and craned into place in one LONG workday. The roof and porch structures were precut in Missoula and installed on site. Roofing, siding and ancillary finishes were also installed on site by our team over approximately 2 weeks.
The modules were built using mass timber construction consisting of 3-ply Cross Laminated Timber reinforced with engineered wood beams and purlins. A combination of dense packed cellulose insulation and 60mm of rigid wood fiber insulation result in envelope R values equal to Hone’s typical double stud wall construction (R36) with proportionately high roof and floor insulation values. Generous Triple pane European style windows bring the vast landscape into every room.
Bayhorse is fully off grid, featuring a robust PV solar system with a propane backup generator, hot water, and backup heat. A minisplit HVAC unit provides shoulder season heat and AC. Systems can be monitored remotely via satellite connection, but the cabin can also be shut down completely in a few simple steps.
The cabin features 2 bedrooms, 1 ½ baths, a full kitchen, laundry, in addition to cozy, but bright living spaces and a fully screened covered porch. The shipping container contains the generator, battery and off grid electronics, a garage for ATVs, and an outdoor kitchen.
Bayhorse hunkers on a ridge overlooking miles of wild land. The large overhangs and sheltered outdoor areas provide shelter from the wind and heat in the summers. The building form is inspired by the sparse, utilitarian agricultural structures of the region, and driven by the logistics of prefabrication. The cladding is Siberian Larch, which will weather to silver gray, requiring minimal maintenance.
